Park rangers at Great Smoky Mountains National Park rescued a 55-year-old man who slipped and fell while hiking on the Alum Cave Trail on Saturday afternoon.
The yet to be identified victim was with a group of four other hikers when he fell about 10 feet and then continued to plummet another 60 feet down the mountainside.
Rangers arrived on the scene and carried the man back down the icy trail where he was transported to a Gatlinburg fire station by ambulance. The victim was then transferred by helicopter the University of Tennessee Medical Center.
Park spokeswoman Dana Soehn stated, “He was stable when he left in the ambulance. But he lost a lot of blood from several lacerations.”
