An 85-year-old woman died after falling from a rock wall in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on Monday, according to authorities.
Around 1:55 p.m., Marguerite Root, of Canal Winchester, Ohio, and her family were taking pictures with a view of the mountains in the background when Root fell eight or nine feet from a parking lot guard wall to a lower stone walkway, according to a news release from the park.
Park rangers and Cherokee tribal emergency responders arrived at the scene and took Root to the Cherokee Tribal Hospital in Cherokee, N.C.
Root never regained consciousness and was pronounced dead at the hospital, park officials said.
