Newfound Gap Road (Hwy 441) has been re-opened to traffic.
At 10:00 am on April 15 Great Smoky Mountains National Park officials opened the heavily traveled road that connects Cherokee, NC and Gatlinburg, TN.
The road had been closed ever since the massive landslide on January 16 that destroyed roughly 200 feet of the road.
The opening of the road comes 30 days ahead of the scheduled completion date. Â The contract to repair the highway was awarded to Phillips & Jordan, Inc. with a completion date set for May 15, 2013. Included in the contract was a monetary incentive of $18,000 for each day that was shaved off of the scheduled completion date of May 15.
