Gatlinburg’s Arts & Crafts Community Trail is home to the largest group of independent artisans in North America. Established in 1937, the 8-mile loop has been designated as a Tennessee Heritage Arts & Crafts Trail.
Whatever your taste, you’re sure to find something to your liking. Painters, potters, candle makers, jewelers, woodcarvers, basket weavers….you name it. If it’s related to Appalachian Mountain crafts and culture more than likely you’ll find it in the Gatlinburg Arts & Crafts Community.
The community got its start around 1937 when the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was still in its infancy. Several Gatlinburg-area craftsmen decided to stay and work in the comfort of their own homes and invite the ever-increasing tourist population to come out and visit them.
Gradually, as the Great Smokies grew in popularity, more and more artisans joined the community and it continues to grow over 70 years later. Today you’ll find over 100 craftsmen and artists along the Gatlinburg Arts & Crafts Trail. Some of the shops are even owned and operated by second and third generation craftsmen continuing their family traditions.
The trail is located only 3 miles from downtown Gatlinburg. Just turn at traffic light #3 in Gatlinburg on Hwy 321N and watch for the signs at Glades and Buckhorn Roads. If you wish you can even tour the community on the Arts & Crafts Trolley which offers frequent stops along the way.
So if you’re looking to escape some of the hustle and bustle of Gatlinburg then head on out the to Arts & Crafts Community and spend the day looking for your very own authentic Smoky Mountain heirloom.
