A 21-year-old hiker from Cherokee, N.C. was found safe Saturday morning after being lost for nearly 12 hours in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Park officials said the man was reported missing Friday at 9:16 pm by his family who said he didn’t return from a solo hike near Clingman’s Dome.
The hiker reportedly traveled in the wrong direction on the Forney Creek Trail, traveled too far and ended up near Fontana Lake in North Carolina. He was described as being wet and tired when found but was in good condition overall.Park Ranger Mark Free stated, “He was very lucky — with the thunderstorms and wind last night — not to have hypothermia or a tree fall down on him. It’s one thing if he was lost on a dry night, but last night those storms were fierce coming through.”
